How to Find Inmate ID Number

When looking into inmate locators, you may have found a spot that said prison inmate number. You are probably wondering what a prison inmate number is and how I know what my prison inmate number is.

Well, today is your lucky day; we are going to dive deep into the topic of prison inmate ID numbers and why you should know them.

What is the DOC Number?

First and foremost, a DOC number is strictly for the state inmates. Inmates in a state facility will have what is known as a DOC number. This number is their number they got assigned with when they first got in the system.

This number allows the inmates to purchase things from the commissary, have visits with family and friends, get food from the food hall, get health care, and much more.

This number essentially is in replace to the inmate’s name. The prison will use this number because it is easier to put in the system than having 12 John Does.

But, every correctional facility, federal, county, and city have their number system. Every offender will be assigned a number once they get into the facility. This number will stay with them as long as they remain in the same network of facilities.

How to Get Prison Identification Number?

If you are wondering how to get your family or friends’ prison identification number, that is quite simple. All you need to do is ask them what their number is.

If you cannot get in touch with them through letters, most inmate locators have their inmate numbers on the inmate’s profiles. You will want to look there. It will be the easiest way to locate that personal identification number.

How to Find Inmate ID Number

As I previously mentioned above, the easiest and fastest way to locate the offender’s identification number is by going to the inmate locator.

So, if the inmate is a federal inmate, you’ll want to go here. If the inmate is a state inmate, you’ll need to find your state’s department of corrections inmate locator.

However, if your inmate is in a county or city facility and does not have an inmate locator, you’ll have to contact the facility.

To find an ID number for the inmate, you will need to follow the prompts you see on your screen. Typically these prompts ask you to enter the inmate’s full name. Once you do that, you’ll come to a list of names that matches what you entered. Scroll down to find the inmate you are looking for. Once you find the inmate you are looking for, you will want to click on their profile. In their profile, typically near the top and near the mugshot, you’ll be able to locate their inmate ID number. When you find it, write it down in a safe place.

Having the inmate ID number on hand is always an excellent tool to have. If you need to contact the facility for any reason, you can easily give off the ID number, and the officers will be able to locate them much quicker rather than giving them their name.

Does an Inmate ID Number Ever Change?

I know we previously touched on this for a split second above, but this question does get asked quite a lot. In short, no, the inmate number doesn’t get changed unless the inmate goes from federal prison to state prison. But if the inmate stays within the federal system, their ID number will remain the same. The same goes for all levels. As long as they stay within that system, the number stays the same. If they go out of that system, then they will get a new number.
